The PhD: off the shelf and into industry

When I was thinking about a PhD at the end of my undergrad studies, one of my key concerns was becoming a world authority on some arcane sub-discipline of mechanical engineering or similar - in other words, I didn't want to finish my thesis, put it on a shelf and then it never be picked up again.

That's why I opted for Systems Modelling and tried to tackle a real world problem - carbon management in the waste industry. Over the last couple of years I've been honing the approach used in my PhD to estimate the carbon impact of managing waste at Biffa. My decision has now been vindicated!

Earlier this month Biffa published a press release relating to the carbon impact of Wirral's municipal waste contract that was well recieved by the sector. Indeed the story was published on the CIWM website (my name in lights!) and on edie (this was my favourite headline).

A full copy of the press release is available here.
